Uneven sanding, taper, and two-pass ridges
Uneven sanding covers several different defects. One edge can finish thinner than the other, a board can taper along its length, or a wide panel can show a step where two passes overlap. Identify which geometry you have before touching the alignment system. A setting that reduces an overlap ridge may not be the correct baseline for ordinary full-width sanding.

Label the board’s corners and feed direction. Measure a simple grid near both edges and through the center, using clean measuring surfaces and avoiding damaged ends. Note the original thickness pattern if you have it. A pencil line disappearing on one side shows contact; it does not by itself establish a flat or parallel result.
Use a straightedge to check the reference face. If the piece rocks or bends, the contact conditions can change during the pass. Diagnose with a stable, flat test board before concluding the drum is misaligned. Keep the project panel aside while you establish a repeatable baseline.
Separate the machine from the workpiece
A defect that repeats on several sound test pieces in the same machine position suggests checking alignment. A problem confined to one distorted panel suggests investigating its support and preparation first. This is a comparison method, not a way to prove every internal part is sound.
Disconnect power before making clearance checks or adjustments. Follow the manual’s stated measuring reference: some checks use the bare drum, others use particular gauges or procedures. Open-end machines that permit two-pass sanding may have a dedicated overlap adjustment or a prescribed change in alignment. Identify that control and the required panel orientation in the exact manual. Do not assume a lever on one model performs the same function as a knob on another.
Mark which half goes through first and keep the same face against the conveyor for the intended operation. Use a broad, stable test panel within the machine’s stated capacity. Check the overlap with both touch and a straightedge after the machine stops. A shadow under side lighting may be a scratch pattern rather than a measurable step.
Keep a recoverable baseline
Photograph settings before adjustment and change only the specified component. If you switch between ordinary sanding and a special two-pass setting, label the operating notes clearly. Forgetting which mode is active can make the next narrow part look like a new alignment failure.
Confirm edge-to-edge thickness and feeding after the change. Do not keep correcting until one imperfect panel looks right; a machine can become miscalibrated to match a distorted reference. If results remain inconsistent, collect the measurement grid and contact support. Loose structural parts, bearing problems, and table damage require identification rather than speculative adjustment.
