Drum sander setup and calibration: establish a trustworthy baseline
Good setup begins with the correct manual and a stable installation. Calibration comes after the machine is assembled, supported, and connected as specified. Do not start by adjusting the drum to suit the first imperfect board. Build a reference you can return to whenever a sanding result becomes questionable.

Plan an unobstructed feed path for the stock you intend to use. Position any approved support tables or stands according to the manual. Do not use an extension table to force a board into a preferred attitude as compensation for an unresolved internal alignment problem.
Choose a valid measuring reference
Use the gauge, test piece, or measuring tool specified for the check. Verify that a wood reference is flat and consistent enough for its purpose. Dirt beneath a gauge or uneven abrasive can change a contact reading. Take measurements with the machine disconnected whenever the procedure requires access to the sanding area.

Verify the result with scrap
Restore the abrasive, covers, and guards before the operating test. Use stable stock comfortably within the machine’s limits and make the prescribed light test passes. Mark orientation and measure a repeatable thickness pattern so you can distinguish across-width variation from end snipe.
Save the successful test piece or its measurement notes as a baseline. A later problem can then be compared against something known rather than against memory. If readings change unpredictably or the adjustment reaches its allowed limit without resolving the issue, stop and ask support. Further correction may require identifying wear, damage, or incorrect assembly rather than adding another adjustment.
