Drum sander stock limits: short, thin, and narrow pieces
A drum sander’s advertised width is only one part of its stock capacity. Minimum length, minimum thickness, minimum width, maximum thickness, and approved stock condition also matter. A piece can fit through the opening and still be outside the machine’s intended operation. Check the manual for the exact model and manufacturing revision before planning small-part sanding.

Record the limits on a setup sheet beside the job drawing. For example, the Grizzly G0716 manual for machines manufactured since February 2018 lists a 4-3/4-inch minimum board length, 2-inch minimum width, and 1/4-inch minimum thickness. Those values are not a recommendation for a different machine.
Check the workpiece at its narrowest and thinnest relevant points, including the intended final thickness. A tapered part can begin inside a limit and finish outside it. Do not let a capacity printed for a newer or larger sander override the requirements for the machine in front of you.
Consider shape and stability
Inspect for cracks, loose joints, embedded objects, and irregular surfaces before feeding. A dimensionally large enough piece may still be unsuitable if it cannot travel stably. Check whether its underside provides a sound reference and whether projections or cutouts affect support.
A group of separate small pieces does not automatically become one valid workpiece simply because they are placed together. Do not feed loose clusters, overlap parts, or hold an undersize piece against a longer board by hand. The machine’s stock-control requirements still apply to every item being sanded.

A carrier changes the thickness, grip, and support arrangement. It also introduces attachments or stops that may approach the drum. Use a sled or carrier only when the manufacturer approves the application and the construction and feed procedure are understood. An online example is not approval for your model.
Do not publish a universal tape, hot-glue, or stop-block recipe for bypassing a minimum stock size. A suitable alternative may be to sand material while it is still part of a larger blank, then cut the final parts using an appropriate tool. Confirm the later machining sequence preserves the dimensions and surface you need.
Plan handling before the pass
Establish the infeed and outfeed support arrangement with the machine stopped. Keep the route clear and choose a workpiece you can manage within the normal operating position. Long stock that requires help should have a clear handling plan so nobody pulls against the conveyor.
During operation, keep guards in place and hands clear of the opening. Never reach in to rescue a slipping small piece. Stop, wait, unplug, and follow the removal instructions. If your project depends on a dimension below the published limit, contact the manufacturer or select another process rather than treating a successful trial as permission.

Can I sand below the minimum thickness on a carrier?
Only with explicit manufacturer guidance for that model and application. A carrier is not a general exemption from stock limits.
Why check the final thickness?
A workpiece may start within the permitted range and become too thin during the planned sanding sequence. Include the full removal allowance in the check.
