A maker who repeatedly sands medium furniture panels may care more about nineteen inches in one pass than thirty-eight inches in two. List the assemblies you expect to make, including their rough sanding dimensions. Allow for the actual workpiece at this stage; a final drawing can understate how wide or thick a glue-up arrives at the sander.

Published capacity and what it means

Laguna’s official documentation lists a 19-inch drum, 38-inch maximum width using two passes, thickness from 1/32 to 4 inches, and a 2-1/4-inch minimum length. The US manual calls for 110V single-phase 20A service, a 4-inch dust connection, and at least 600 CFM recommended collector capacity. It explicitly says not to rewire this machine for 220V.

The detail that changes the decision

The manufacturer describes feed-load control and a wide-panel adjustment lever. Ask to see both explained using a panel, because a control’s value is easiest to understand in context. Even with an adjustment intended to help the overlap, inspect the resulting surface and check thickness across its width. A feature that helps setup does not remove the need to verify the work.

Plan the complete purchase

Support tables and mobility hardware can change how practical the machine feels in a small room. Decide whether you will keep it in an operating position or roll it out for each session. The second approach requires clear routes, manageable hose connections, and somewhere to put long work. Include those needs in the purchase calculation instead of comparing the base machine alone.

Include consumables and setup time in the budget. Price several useful abrasive grits, the correct dust hose and fittings, a reliable thickness gauge, and whatever stock support your layout requires. Ask how returns work after assembly and who supplies replacement wear parts. A quote that answers those questions is more useful than a bare advertised price, especially when two sellers offer different packages under the same model name.

Set a baseline in your own shop

Before your first valuable piece, make a simple acceptance sample from sound scrap that meets all of the confirmed stock limits. Mark its starting thickness in several locations, use a conservative sanding setup, and inspect the surface under angled light. Keep notes on the abrasive and material. This creates a repeatable reference for your own machine without assuming a manufacturer specification promises a particular finish.

Compare the nearest alternatives
