The JET JWDS-1836 is most interesting when your ordinary boards land just beyond a sixteen-inch machine. Two inches can be a meaningful workflow improvement if they eliminate repositioning on every job. Measure finished assemblies rather than individual boards. A panel built from narrow strips can easily be too wide for the machine that seemed adequate while shopping. For a shop making similar cabinet doors or cutting boards repeatedly, the key question is whether the eighteen-inch envelope covers those actual assemblies with comfortable clearance.
Published capacity and what it means
JET’s shared manual explicitly distinguishes this model from the 1632: the 1836 handles 18 inches in one pass and 36 inches in two, using a 1-3/4 HP, 115V drum motor. Its thickness envelope is 1/32 to 3 inches, and minimum board length is 2-3/8 inches. The current manual lists a 4-inch dust port and 400 CFM minimum extraction.
The detail that changes the decision
The extra width is best understood as fewer handling operations for a particular group of parts. It does not establish a measured production-speed advantage for every material. Width, grit, wood species, abrasive condition, and the amount being removed all influence the work. A wider machine can still require conservative passes, especially when the full drum is engaged.

Lay out the machine with your longest intended board in mind. A floor plan that accommodates the stand may still fail when an eight-foot workpiece enters and exits. Include room to carry a finished piece back around the sander, space for support equipment, and access to the dust connection without a tight hose bend immediately at the hood.
Include consumables and setup time in the budget. Price several useful abrasive grits, the correct dust hose and fittings, a reliable thickness gauge, and whatever stock support your layout requires. Ask how returns work after assembly and who supplies replacement wear parts. A quote that answers those questions is more useful than a bare advertised price, especially when two sellers offer different packages under the same model name.
Set a baseline in your own shop
Before your first valuable piece, make a simple acceptance sample from sound scrap that meets all of the confirmed stock limits. Mark its starting thickness in several locations, use a conservative sanding setup, and inspect the surface under angled light. Keep notes on the abrasive and material. This creates a repeatable reference for your own machine without assuming a manufacturer specification promises a particular finish.
Compare the nearest alternatives
The 1632 is the logical comparison for narrower work; the 2244 deserves attention if twenty-inch panels are routine.
