JET JWDS-1836 vs JWDS-2244: Width and Stock Limits

By John Morris · Updated 2026-09-07 · Research method

The JET JWDS-2244 adds useful capacity over the JWDS-1836 when ordinary panels exceed eighteen inches or suitable blanks need more than a three-inch opening. It also has a higher documented extraction requirement and an unresolved minimum-length inconsistency in its linked manual. That combination deserves a complete installation comparison, not an automatic recommendation of the larger machine.

Four additional inches can remove routine repositioning

JET documents eighteen-inch single-pass and thirty-six-inch two-pass width for the 1836, versus twenty-two and forty-four inches for the 2244. A twenty-inch cabinet panel illustrates the practical difference: it fits within the larger machine single-pass rating but calls for the smaller model approved wider-panel procedure. A forty-inch panel exceeds the 1836 documented maximum.

Identify how often those parts appear in your schedule. A shop mainly sanding narrow rails gains little from capacity that stays unused. A shop processing twenty-inch glue-ups repeatedly can value the handling change directly. These conclusions concern workpiece geometry; they do not claim the larger machine removes a given amount of wood faster.

Thickness expands, but short-stock evidence weakens

The 1836 thickness range is 1/32 to three inches, while the 2244 extends the upper limit to four inches. That can matter for appropriate thick assemblies, provided their other dimensions and material are suitable. Neither opening specification establishes that an awkward or unstable object is acceptable to feed.

Minimum length requires separate treatment. The 1836 manual documents 2-3/8 inches. The current shared 2244/2550 manual prints 3-2/8 inches beside 60 mm, an inconsistent conversion, while earlier official product information gives 2-3/8 inches. We leave the 2244 limit unresolved. Buyers making short blanks should obtain JET confirmation for the supplied revision rather than borrowing the smaller model limit.

The dust system may change the purchase total

Both documented US models use 115V power and a four-inch dust connection. The current 1836 manual lists 400 CFM minimum extraction; the 2244 manual specifies 550 CFM. Those figures are model-specific requirements in the cited documentation. A system selected narrowly around the 1836 requirement should be reassessed before assuming it is sufficient for the 2244.

Compare the actual collection route, filter arrangement, and restrictions. The common connection diameter does not erase the airflow difference. Confirm electrical requirements using the exact manual and machine identity, and include the collector running alongside the sander in shop planning. Any necessary installation work belongs in the larger-machine quote before comparing its value.

The 2244 name does not imply oscillation

This comparison concerns the ordinary JWDS-2244, not the separate JWDS-2244OSC. Product photographs, accessory suggestions, or a related oscillating listing should not be used to add features to the exact offer here. Likewise, compare documented usable sanding width rather than substituting a physical drum dimension found in a different specification field.

Ask a dealer to demonstrate the actual configuration with your representative panel. Look at alignment access, feed controls, and the steps for switching between narrow and oversized work. On a twenty-inch sample, the operational distinction between these models becomes visible. Examine the resulting scratches and thickness rather than treating a more elaborate model name as evidence of a better final surface.

Budget ownership around wider material

The machine body is only part of the space required for a twenty-to-forty-inch panel. Plan the infeed, outfeed, side support, and route for carrying the work back. Confirm the offered stand and any mobility or extension accessories individually. A photograph can show a convenient setup without making every component part of the quoted package.

For both models, identify the correct abrasive wraps and replacement conveyor parts, and check service access in your intended location. Ask about delivery placement and assembly responsibilities as well as current seller terms. This article does not quote a live price or predict abrasive life. The useful comparison is the cost of two complete stations capable of handling the same planned work.

Final choice depends on panels and unresolved limits

Choose the 1836 when most parts fit eighteen inches, three inches of thickness is sufficient, and its thirty-six-inch two-pass allowance covers your exceptions. Choose the 2244 when repeated eighteen-to-twenty-two-inch blanks, larger approved panels, or suitable thicker work justify the expanded envelope and extraction requirement. These are conditional recommendations based on documented capacity.

If tiny blanks are central to your purchase, resolve the 2244 minimum-length discrepancy before ordering. If all of your work is long panels, that particular uncertainty may not change the width decision, but it should remain visible in your records. Compare the delivered packages and request a representative demonstration before paying for capacity that may or may not remove your actual bottleneck.

Questions, answered

What additional work fits the 2244 in one pass?

Appropriate stock wider than eighteen inches and up to twenty-two inches falls within its documented single-pass capacity; the 1836 requires its approved wider-panel procedure there.

Can I use 2-3/8 inches as the 2244 minimum length?

Do not assume it. The linked current manual has an inconsistent inch/mm entry, so confirm the applicable minimum with JET before selecting it for short stock.

Is the JWDS-2244 an oscillating machine?

The ordinary JWDS-2244 compared here is distinct from the JWDS-2244OSC. Confirm the exact model and package before buying.
