The main capacity numbers are a tie

Both manufacturers document sixteen inches in one pass and thirty-two inches with two passes, with stock thickness from 1/32 to three inches. For an ordinary fourteen-inch cabinet component, neither machine gains an obvious capacity advantage. For a broad panel, both require the open-end process. Decide how often that second operation will occur in the work you actually plan.

A useful exercise is to sort your next ten assemblies into those comfortably below sixteen inches and those above it. If most are wider, compare a larger single-pass machine before settling this head-to-head. You may gain more from removing a repeated handling step than from choosing between two controls on machines in the same width class.

A small minimum-length difference can matter

JET’s official specification gives a 2-3/8-inch minimum board length; SuperMax lists 2-1/4 inches. That eighth-inch difference is irrelevant for long panels but potentially meaningful for a narrowly defined small-part process. It should be treated as a dimensional constraint, not a general claim that one machine is safer or more capable with every small blank.

Check all other stock requirements and the manual’s thin-material guidance before drawing a conclusion from either minimum. A part meeting the length number may still be unsuitable because of its shape, stability, or another limitation. If a final component is tiny, consider whether the project can be sanded earlier as a larger blank using an approved process.

Compare controls through a realistic demonstration

Both models offer feed-load management, but feature names are less useful than understanding what the operator does. Ask a seller to explain height adjustment, baseline calibration, conveyor setup, and the response to an excessive load. Then ask how you would recognize that the abrasive or depth setting needs attention. A control that assists feeding does not make stock preparation unnecessary.

The SuperMax documentation includes a digital readout, while the exact seller package must still be checked. A display can help repeat a setting, but the finished workpiece remains the reference. Bring a thickness gauge to a demonstration and ask about measuring the first piece. Do not convert a digital display’s resolution into an unsupported promise of finished-part accuracy.

Dust collection is a real difference in the installation

The current JET manual specifies 400 CFM minimum extraction at a four-inch connection. The SuperMax manual specifies a four-inch port and 600 CFM minimum recommended collector capacity. These are manufacturer recommendations, not directly comparable laboratory measurements, and some applications may require more. A system satisfying one documented baseline should not automatically be assumed to satisfy the other.

JET specifies 115V US power and recommends a twenty-amp circuit; SuperMax calls for 110V single-phase twenty-amp service. Check the matching instructions and your planned installation rather than inferring adequacy from a familiar plug. Consider where the collector operates as well as the sander, and arrange the work area so neither hose nor cable obstructs normal handling.

Build a complete ownership quote

Have each seller identify the stand, extension tables, casters or mobile base, readout, and abrasive supplied with the exact offer. Photographs often show a more complete station than the base package. Add the items required by your layout before comparing totals. A seller with a slightly different bundle may look cheaper or dearer without providing a meaningfully different machine.

Look beyond the initial wrap. Identify the abrasive you will routinely buy, the conveyor replacement process, and the support route if tracking or alignment becomes difficult. Read those sections of each manual before purchasing. Choosing controls and maintenance access that you understand can be more useful to a beginner than relying on a broad claim about professional performance.

Which buyer should choose which?

JET deserves the closer look when its documented extraction requirement fits your planned system and its operating controls feel straightforward. SuperMax deserves the closer look when its particular adjustment/readout arrangement or slightly shorter length allowance solves a real need. With ordinary stock inside both envelopes, let the complete quotation and service answers carry more weight than the shared 16-32 name.

Do not choose SuperMax solely because it has a smaller minimum length, or JET solely because its listed CFM is lower. Those advantages only matter when they address your constraints. After installation, verify the machine on scrap and measure the result across the width. That gives you a personal baseline without pretending this comparison established a winner for finish quality.
